The Faculty of Natural Resources at Lorestan University, on the occasion of World Cheetah Day and Research and Technology Week, held a promotional scientific chair titled "The Iranian Cheetah, Participatory Conservation, Opportunities and Threats."
According to the Public Relations of Lorestan University, Dr. Navid Zamani stated in this meeting: The Asiatic cheetah is known worldwide by the name of Iran.
He emphasized that this species is in an extinction crisis, and now we have less than 30 individuals in Iran, and to protect this species, we need the cooperation of local communities, environmentalists, and so on. He added: Based on the investigations carried out, reviewing the available resources and discussions with experts and experienced individuals, the presence of the Asiatic cheetah in the mid-1970s (solar calendar) in 44 independent regions across the country with an area of more than 12 million hectares is certain.
He added: Hunting cheetahs and their prey and the destruction of their habitats in the country have caused its definite distribution area to gradually decrease significantly, so that in 2001, the presence of cheetahs was only proven in five areas with an area of about less than four million hectares.
Zamani stated: The five main habitats of this animal are Kavir National Park and Protected Area, Touran National Park, Wildlife Refuge and Protected Area, Bahafq Mountain Protected Area, and the wildlife refuges of Dare Anjir and Naybandan.
At the end of this scientific chair, the questions of the members of the scientific board and students were answered.
The head of the Faculty of Natural Resources at Lorestan University is Dr. Ali Haghighizadeh.
